IAM Patent 1000 – About Bereskin & Parr:

“Bereskin & Parr is as prolific in filing as it is in court. “The team has a wonderfully collaborative approach, and they help clients streamline and focus their attention on their products.” A chart topper in the country, it has a stacked roster of lawyers on hand. Leading the litigation practice, Andrew McIntosh is a master of his craft. Recently, he joined forces with Adam Bobker to defend Nova Chemicals in a disgorgement claim arising from a patent infringement dispute against Dow Chemical. They successfully fought for the court to use a complete absorption accounting system for the first time in Canada, resulting in a large reduction in the amount payable. Joshua Spicer also recently teamed up with McIntosh, and the duo represented Packers Plus Energy Services in infringement actions for monetary damages involving oil and gas wells. James Raakman makes his debut in the IAM Patent 1000 this year and is holding down the firm’s automotive practice. He has deep technical knowledge, which he combines with innovative legal skills to provide high-quality counsel. Acting on behalf of two GlaxoSmithKline-related companies in a patent infringement relating to HIV medication are Donald Cameron and Scott MacKendrick, both of whom are reliable litigators who produce excellent results. Supporting them on the prosecution side are Melanie Szweras and Michael Fenwick. Szweras co-leads the regulatory practice and is well versed in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and food industries. “Michael is enormously skilled and provides superb business advice. It is a privilege to work with him.” Leading the life sciences practice, as well as co-leading the patent and cannabis groups, is Micheline Gravelle. Of late she has been handling several patent applications for biotech company CSL Behring, including work on treatments for rare diseases using plasma-derived and synthetic products. Carmela De Luca has been assisting University Health Network with its applications for a range of cutting-edge inventions, while also managing its worldwide patent portfolio. Joining the team from Borden Ladner Gervais in March 2023, Scott Pundsack draws on his background in civil engineering to not only assist those in the life sciences space but also those in the clean-tech industry. Anchoring the chemical practice is Patricia Folkins, who has valuable in-house experience and is a business-focused portfolio developer. Holding down the fort in the mechanical arena, Philip Mendes da Costa and Jason Hynes shine. Mendes da Costa leads the group and has an effortless facility for breaking things down in a straightforward manner, while Hynes makes a significant difference for patrons when it comes to creating strategies. Bhupinder RandhawaLouis-Pierre Gravelle and Robert Storey are leading electrical and computer technology minds. Randhawa oversees the team, the AI practice and co-leads the patent group. His opinions are critical to the success of his clients’ protection. The bilingual Gravelle helps to build business intelligence for his following that relates to their competitors, and Storey’s almost four decades of experience have resulted in refined strategies and a commercial approach to patent protection. Victor Krichker is head of the licensing and transactions group, adding value to every deal, and Noel Courage handles significant licensing work for biotechnology inventions. The pair play a crucial role as IP protectors, negotiators and counsellors.”
